Mulank Calculator — Root Number
Your Mulank (root or psychic number) comes from the day of the month you were born, reduced to a single digit. In Indian numerology it shapes your personality and instincts.
Using the Mulank calculator
Enter your date of birth
Only the day of the month is used for the Mulank.
We reduce the day
The birth day is added down to a single digit from 1 to 9.

A Mulank (also spelt Moolank or root number) is your psychic number in numerology — the single digit you get by adding together the digits of the day of the month you were born and reducing them to one digit from 1 to 9. For example, if you were born on the 17th, 1 + 7 = 8, so your Mulank is 8. It is the most used number in Indian numerology and is read as your instinctive nature, the way you react before you have had time to think.
What is a Mulank?
Your Mulank comes from one small piece of your birth date: the day of the month. Take 23 March and only the 23 matters. Because of that, a Mulank calculator works differently from almost every other tool on this site — you do not need your birth time, your birth place, or even your birth year. Just the date, and only the last two digits of it, and you are done.
In Indian numerology the Mulank is read as your instinct, your starting temperament. It is the version of you that reacts before you have had time to think about it. Someone who argues on instinct and apologises later is showing Mulank energy. So is someone who withdraws quietly rather than explain. Numerologists describe these as tendencies rather than verdicts, and that framing matters — a Mulank describes a pattern, not a ceiling.
How to calculate your Mulank by hand
The method is short enough to do in your head. Take the day of the month, add its digits, and if the result is still two digits, add those again. That is the whole calculation.
| Your birth day | Add the digits | Your Mulank |
|---|---|---|
| 5th | Already a single digit | 5 |
| 14th | 1 + 4 = 5 | 5 |
| 17th | 1 + 7 = 8 | 8 |
| 22nd | 2 + 2 = 4 | 4 |
| 23rd | 2 + 3 = 5 | 5 |
| 29th | 2 + 9 = 11, then 1 + 1 = 2 | 2 |
| 31st | 3 + 1 = 4 | 4 |
The only day that needs two rounds of addition is the 29th — every other date in the calendar resolves in a single pass. If you want to check our work, try the calculator above with a 29th birth date and it will return 2.
Mulank vs Bhagyank: which number is which?
This is the single most common point of confusion in Indian numerology, so it is worth being precise. The two numbers use the same addition method but read from different inputs. Your Mulank uses the day of birth alone and represents your instinctive nature. Your Bhagyank — also called the Destiny number or Expression number — uses the full date of birth, day plus month plus year, and represents your life's direction. A third number, the Name number, is derived from your name.
| Mulank | Bhagyank (Destiny) | |
|---|---|---|
| Calculated from | Day of birth only | Full date of birth |
| Represents | Instinct and temperament | Life direction and purpose |
| Possible values | 1 to 9 only | 1 to 9, or 11, 22, 33 |
| Tool needed | /calculators/mulank-calculator | /calculators/destiny-number-calculator |
Because the two numbers are calculated from overlapping digits, they often land on the same value. Roughly one person in three shares a Mulank and a Bhagyank. When they match, it is read as a consistent direction — your instincts and your path point the same way. When they differ, the gap is itself informative.
Reading your Mulank
The nine readings below describe a temperament rather than a prediction. Each one lists what that number tends to feel like from the inside, and — just as importantly — the growth edge that people with that Mulank usually recognise in themselves.
Mulank 1 — The Leader (Independence)
Ones are natural initiators: ambitious, original and self-reliant, happiest carving their own path rather than joining one. Leadership and fresh thinking come to them easily. The growth edge is patience and collaboration — the instinct to go alone is strong, and waiting for consensus can feel like standing still. Ruled by the number 1, and astrologically associated with the Sun, which makes it a number people notice in a room early.
Mulank 2 — The Peacemaker (Harmony)
Twos bring balance and empathy to everything they touch. Intuitive, supportive and diplomatic, they do their best work in partnership and are attuned to the mood of a room before anyone speaks. The growth edge is trusting their own voice — the same sensitivity that reads other people well can make them hesitate to state a position. Ruled by 2 and associated with the Moon.
Mulank 3 — The Communicator (Expression)
Threes are expressive and joyful, gifted with words, art and connection. Their charm lifts a room and they learn fastest socially. The growth edge is focus over scattering — starting many things is a natural high, and finishing them is the practice. Ruled by 3 and associated with Jupiter, the guru planet, which is why threes are often teachers, writers and performers.
Mulank 4 — The Builder (Stability)
Fours build things that last, through diligence and order. Reliable, disciplined and loyal, they turn plans into structures that others can work within. The growth edge is flexibility — the same thoroughness that makes them dependable can read as rigidity when plans change. Ruled by 4 and associated with Rahu and Uranus, the planet of sudden change.
Mulank 5 — The Explorer (Freedom)
Fives crave freedom, change and experience. Adaptable, curious and magnetic, they learn by doing rather than by instruction. The growth edge is commitment and moderation — the urge to keep all options open is what makes them interesting, and what makes commitment hard. Ruled by 5 and associated with Mercury, the planet of movement and communication.
Mulank 6 — The Nurturer (Responsibility)
Sixes are devoted to family, service and beauty. Warm, caring and protective, they care deeply for people and are drawn to roles that hold a community together. The growth edge is nurturing themselves too — responsibility can spread until everyone is looked after except the one doing the looking. Ruled by 6 and associated with Venus, which is why sixes gravitate towards harmony, art and comfort.
Mulank 7 — The Seeker (Wisdom)
Sevens seek truth beneath the surface — thinkers, researchers and mystics who are not satisfied by the first explanation. Their depth is a genuine gift in any field that rewards analysis. The growth edge is opening up and trusting others; the same withdrawal that protects their thinking can keep them isolated. Ruled by 7 and associated with Ketu, the planet of detachment and insight.
Mulank 8 — The Powerhouse (Abundance)
Eights are built for achievement, influence and material mastery. Strategic, resilient and comfortable with authority, they set goals and manifest resources effectively. The growth edge is balancing power with compassion — the drive that builds an empire can flatten the people inside it. Ruled by 8 and associated with Saturn, which makes them the most materially serious of the nine.
Mulank 9 — The Humanitarian (Compassion)
Nines carry a broad, compassionate vision of the world. Generous, idealistic and wise, they lead by example and worry about the bigger picture. The growth edge is letting go and receiving — the instinct to give is strong, and so is the reluctance to accept help in return. Ruled by 9 and associated with Mars, which gives nines both their drive and their impatience.
Common Mulank mistakes
- Using the whole date instead of the day. If you add your month and year, you have calculated a Bhagyank, not a Mulank.
- Keeping a double-digit result. 11 is not a valid Mulank — it reduces to 2. The same goes for 22 becoming 4.
- Reading Mulank as a ranking. There is no 'best' number. Each has genuine strengths, and the growth edge is part of the number, not a flaw in it.
- Treating it as fixed. Numerology treats a Mulank as a tendency you can work with, not a prediction you must accept.
- Confusing it with the Sun sign in Western astrology. A Western sign comes from your birth date and the Sun's position; a Mulank comes from your birth day and numerology's own logic. They are unrelated systems.
