Birth Chart (Kundli) Calculator
Your birth chart (kundli or natal chart) is a snapshot of the sky at the exact moment of your birth. It shows where every planet sat by sign, house and degree.

Date, time and place fix every planetary position.
We compute the chart
Your Lagna, houses and all nine planets are calculated in the sidereal zodiac.
Read your kundli
You get a clear table of each planet's sign, house and degree.
A birth chart is a map of the sky at the exact moment and place you were born. In Vedic astrology it is called a kundli or janam kundali. It records the position of the Ascendant, the twelve houses, and the nine grahas — the seven classical planets plus Rahu and Ketu — and every other Vedic technique is applied to it.
What is a birth chart?
A birth chart freezes one instant of a moving sky. The planets never stop, so a chart is only valid for a specific time and place — which is why a kundli needs a birth time down to the minute and a birthplace down to the city, and why two people born on the same day almost never share one.
Three things turn that snapshot into a chart rather than a list. The Ascendant fixes the starting point. The houses divide the sky into twelve sectors, each governing a department of life. The planets are then placed into those sectors and read against each other. Change the birth time and the Ascendant moves, which rotates every house with it — a small time error rearranges the whole chart, not just one entry.
| Component | What it is | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Ascendant (Lagna) | The sign rising on the eastern horizon | Fixes the first house and rotates the other eleven |
| Houses (Bhavas) | Twelve sectors of the sky | Each governs an area of life — money, marriage, career |
| Grahas | Seven planets plus Rahu and Ketu | The actors placed into those houses |
| Rashis | The twelve signs | The flavour each planet takes |
How to generate your kundli
- 1Enter your date of birth. This fixes the slower planets and narrows the Moon and Ascendant to a range.
- 2Enter your exact time of birth. This is what determines the Ascendant and therefore all twelve houses. A recorded time from a certificate or hospital record is worth more than a remembered one.
- 3Enter your place of birth. The birthplace supplies both the latitude and the timezone. Historic daylight-saving changes and renamed cities are common sources of error.
- 4Read the chart. You get each planet's sign, house and degree, with the Ascendant shown above them as the anchor the chart is built from.
Sidereal and tropical charts
Two zodiac conventions are in wide use, and they sit about 24° apart. The tropical zodiac, standard in Western astrology, anchors the signs to the equinoxes, so the Sun enters Aries at the March equinox regardless of the stars behind it. The sidereal zodiac, standard in Vedic astrology, anchors the signs to the fixed stars instead. Both are internally consistent; they answer the question differently, which is why the same birth data can yield signs one place apart between the two systems.
This calculator uses the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa, the standard convention for Vedic chart work in India. If you compare it with a Western chart generator and find the signs differ, that is expected rather than an error in either tool — check that both are using the same zodiac before concluding anything.
A chart is not a reading
This tool shows the positions; it does not interpret them. That distinction is deliberate. A chart is a set of measurements, and every school of astrology applies its own methods to those measurements. Interpreting how the houses, planets and periods work together — and doing so responsibly — is a separate step, and it is what a full report does rather than what a position table can.
- The positions are exact and verifiable — you can check any of them against an ephemeris.
- The houses depend on your birth time, so an approximate time makes them provisional.
- Interpretation is a tradition, not a measurement. Different schools read the same chart differently.
- A chart describes tendencies and timing frames. It is not a prediction, and AstroPath does not present it as one.
Calculators that build on your chart
A kundli is the foundation, and several of the most-asked questions about it have their own calculators. These four use the same birth details.
The Ascendant is the anchor of the whole chart, and it gets its own calculator with a fuller explanation of why the birth time matters so much. Rising Sign (Ascendant) Calculator
The Moon sign is the sign Vedic horoscopes and Sade Sati are read from, and it is the second of the three anchors alongside the Ascendant and the Sun. Rashi (Moon Sign) Calculator
