Nakshatra Calculator — Find Your Birth Star

A nakshatra is a lunar mansion — one of 27 segments of the zodiac the Moon passes through. Your birth nakshatra is the one your Moon occupied at birth, and it fine-tunes your Vedic profile.

A nakshatra is one of 27 equal segments of the zodiac, each 13°20' wide, that the Moon passes through on its monthly circuit. Your birth nakshatra, or janma nakshatra, is the segment the Moon occupied when you were born. Each has a ruling planet and four quarters called padas, and the exact position within it fixes the starting point of your Vimshottari Dasha.

What is a nakshatra?

The twelve signs divide the zodiac into twelve stretches of 30°. The nakshatras divide the same circle into twenty-seven stretches of 13°20'. Both describe where a planet sits; the nakshatra grid is simply finer, and in Vedic astrology it is the grid used for anything involving the Moon.

The word is usually translated as lunar mansion, and the images are older than the sign system — the nakshatras appear in the oldest layers of Vedic literature, where the signs appear later. Each carries a name, a ruling planet, and a symbol, and each is split into four padas of 3°20'. That last division is what links the nakshatra to the Navamsa, the ninth-part chart used for marriage and for the deeper reading of any planet.

How to find your birth nakshatra

  1. 1Enter your date of birth. This places the Moon within a narrow arc of the zodiac and identifies the likely nakshatra.
  2. 2Enter your time of birth. The Moon travels roughly one nakshatra in a day, so the time usually decides between two candidates — and at a boundary it is the only input that can.
  3. 3Enter your place of birth. The birthplace fixes the timezone, which converts your clock time into the position the calculation reads.
  4. 4Read your birth star. You get the nakshatra, its ruling planet, and which of the four padas the Moon falls in.

What your nakshatra is used for

  • Vimshottari Dasha. The Moon's position inside its nakshatra decides which planetary period you were born into and how much of it had already elapsed. This is the single most important use.
  • Compatibility matching. Traditional Ashtakoota matching scores eight factors, and the nakshatra of each person supplies several of them, including Nadi and Gana.
  • Muhurta. Choosing a date for a wedding, a housewarming or a new venture reads the nakshatra of the moment, not just the Moon sign.
  • Naming. The traditional practice of naming a child by the syllable tied to their birth nakshatra and pada comes directly from this calculation.

Because the nakshatra is a description of where the Moon sat rather than a forecast, it does not predict what will happen. It indicates a starting condition and a timing frame. Vedic astrologers treat it as the most precise of the Moon-based measures, which is why it is asked for before anything predictive is attempted.

The birth star is the finest Moon-based measure in a chart, and these four tools either feed into it or follow directly from it. All use the same birth details.

The Dasha sequence starts from your nakshatra, so this is the tool that turns it into dates. It shows the Mahadasha and Antardasha running now. Dasha Calculator
