Rashi Calculator — Find Your Moon Sign
Your Rashi is your Vedic Moon sign — the zodiac sign the Moon occupied when you were born. It is the sign used for your horoscope, Sade Sati and most Vedic predictions.

Your Rashi, also called the Janma Rashi, is the zodiac sign the Moon occupied at the moment you were born. It is the Vedic Moon sign, and in Jyotish it carries more weight than the Sun sign: daily horoscopes, Sade Sati and the starting point of your Vimshottari Dasha all read from it rather than from your Sun sign.
What is a Rashi?
Rashi is the Sanskrit word for a zodiac sign, and Janma Rashi means the birth sign — the one marking where the Moon stood when you arrived. Most people outside India know their Sun sign, because Western astrology is built around the Sun. Vedic astrology is built around the Moon instead, and this is the first thing that surprises anyone crossing between the two.
There is a practical reason for that emphasis. The Sun holds one sign for about a month, so roughly one twelfth of the population shares your Sun sign and a Sun-sign reading has to speak to millions of people at once. The Moon changes sign every two and a half days, so your Rashi divides people into much finer groups. It is simply a more specific label, which is why the daily horoscope columns in India are indexed by Moon sign, not Sun sign.
Why your Rashi is not your Sun sign
Two independent things separate them: which body is used, and which zodiac is used. The Rashi takes the Moon rather than the Sun, and it is measured on the sidereal zodiac rather than the tropical one. Both differences usually point the same way, so your Rashi is often one or more signs away from the Western sign you already know.
| Rashi (Vedic Moon sign) | Western Sun sign | |
|---|---|---|
| Set by | The Moon at your birth | The Sun on your birth date |
| Changes every | About 2.5 days | About a month |
| Zodiac used | Sidereal (fixed stars) | Tropical (equinoxes) |
| Your date of birth | Narrows it, not enough alone | Almost always enough |
| Used for | Vedic readings, Sade Sati, Dasha | Western readings |
How to find your Rashi
- 1Enter your date of birth. This narrows the Moon to a window of two or three signs and is the single most useful input.
- 2Enter your time of birth. The Moon moves about 13° a day, so the time usually settles the sign — and at a boundary it is the only thing that can.
- 3Enter your place of birth. The birthplace supplies the timezone that converts your clock time into the position the calculation needs.
- 4Read your Janma Rashi. You get the Moon's sidereal sign, its degree, and the nakshatra it falls in — the last of which feeds directly into your Dasha.
What your Rashi is used for
- Daily and monthly horoscopes. Vedic horoscope columns are indexed by Moon sign, so your Rashi is the sign you should read.
- Sade Sati. This seven-and-a-half-year Saturn passage is calculated from your Moon sign, not your Sun or rising sign.
- Your Dasha timeline. Vimshottari Dasha begins from the exact point of the Moon within its nakshatra, so the Rashi and the birth star are two halves of the same calculation.
- Compatibility. Traditional matching compares the two Moon signs and their nakshatras, which is why it is called Rashi matching.
It is worth being clear about what a Rashi is not. It is not a prediction, and it is not a statement about your personality that overrides everything else. Vedic astrology reads the Moon as the significator of mind and feeling, and the sign it occupies as the flavour of that mind — a frame for reflection rather than a verdict.
Calculators that pair well with your Rashi
The Moon sign is one of three anchors in a Vedic chart, and the other two are a short step away. These four tools use the same birth details you just entered.
The Ascendant is the third anchor alongside the Sun and Moon, set by the horizon rather than by a planet. Reading your Lagna next to your Rashi is the classic pairing in Jyotish. Rising Sign (Ascendant) Calculator
Your Rashi covers a 30° stretch of sky; the nakshatra is the 13°20' slice of it the Moon actually sat in. That finer position is what sets your Dasha timeline. Nakshatra Calculator
This turns the Moon sign into a dated timeline — the current Mahadasha and Antardasha, with the years each one runs. Dasha Calculator
Sade Sati is the Saturn passage across the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs from your Moon. Since it is calculated from the Rashi, it is the natural next question. Shani Sade Sati Calculator
