Atmakaraka & Darakaraka Calculator
In Jaimini astrology the Chara Karakas are significators ranked by degree. The Atmakaraka (highest degree) is the 'soul planet'; the Darakaraka (lowest) signifies the spouse.

The Chara Karakas are eight significators in Jaimini astrology, each assigned to a planet by ranking the planets on how far they have travelled within their sign. The planet at the highest degree is the Atmakaraka, the 'soul planet'. The planet at the lowest degree is the Darakaraka, the significator of the spouse. These roles come from a planet's position within its sign, not from its absolute longitude in the zodiac.
What are the Chara Karakas?
Karaka means significator, and chara means moving or variable — so the Chara Karakas are significators that are not fixed in advance. In most of astrology a planet carries a settled portfolio: Venus governs marriage, Jupiter governs wisdom, Saturn governs discipline. The Jaimini system, attributed to the sage Jaimini, does something different. It lets the chart decide which planet plays which role, by ranking the planets against each other.
The ranking is by degree within a sign. A planet at 28° of Taurus has travelled further through its sign than one at 4° of Leo, so the first outranks the second even though Leo comes later in the zodiac. That single rule is what makes the system 'chara': the same planet can be Atmakaraka in one chart and Darakaraka in another, because the roles are assigned by position rather than by identity.
The eight karakas and what each signifies
| Karaka | Role | Signifies |
|---|---|---|
| AK | Atmakaraka | The soul, the core self and life direction |
| AmK | Amatyakaraka | Career, livelihood and the guide to the soul |
| BK | Bhratrikaraka | Siblings and the guru |
| MK | Matrikaraka | The mother |
| PiK | Pitrikaraka | The father |
| PK | Putrakaraka | Children, creativity and students |
| GK | Gnatikaraka | Obstacles, rivals and health |
| DK | Darakaraka | The spouse and partnership |
The two ends of the ranking draw the most attention, and for opposite reasons. The Atmakaraka sits at the top and is treated as the planet carrying the soul's agenda — the thing a person is here to work on, which is rarely the thing they find easiest. The Darakaraka sits at the bottom and is read as the significator of the marriage partner, both their character and the nature of the partnership itself.
How the karakas are calculated
- 1Enter your birth details. The karakas are read from the exact degree of each of the seven classical planets in your chart.
- 2We measure each planet within its sign. Every planet is measured from 0° of the sign it occupies, not from the start of the zodiac.
- 3We rank the seven planets. The planets are ordered from the highest degree within its sign down to the lowest, producing the eight karakas.
- 4Read the two ends. The highest is your Atmakaraka and the lowest your Darakaraka, with the full ordered list shown alongside.
This calculator uses the seven-planet scheme, ranking the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn. An eight-karaka scheme that adds Rahu exists in some traditions and will produce a different Atmakaraka for some charts. Neither is an error; they are different conventions, and it is worth knowing which one a reading was built on.
The Karakamsa and the Ishta Devata
Jaimini's system goes one step further with the Atmakaraka. The sign it occupies in the Navamsa chart is called the Karakamsa, and the Karakamsa is then used to derive the Ishta Devata — the deity associated with a person's spiritual path. That is why these three calculations are usually met together: the Atmakaraka names the planet, the Karakamsa gives the sign, and the Ishta Devata follows from the two.
These are interpretive and spiritual frames rather than measurable claims. Jaimini traditions differ in how the deity is derived, and the result is best treated as a contemplative suggestion rather than a prescription. The degree positions themselves are exact and verifiable; what they are taken to mean is a tradition of interpretation.
