Mangal Dosha (Manglik) Calculator
Mangal Dosha (also called Manglik or Kuja Dosha) is present when Mars sits in certain houses. It is one of the most-checked factors before a Vedic marriage match.

Mangal Dosha, also called Manglik Dosha, is a condition in Vedic astrology that arises when Mars occupies the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house. Traditionally it is checked from the Ascendant, and this calculator also checks it from the Moon and Venus. It is a placement, not a verdict: classical texts list many cancellation rules, and the position of one planet does not decide a marriage.
What is Mangal Dosha?
Mars — Mangal — is the planet of energy, drive, courage and conflict. In the houses connected with the self and with partnership it is considered capable of bringing heat into those areas. When Mars occupies one of six positions, the chart is said to carry Mangal Dosha, and a person with it is described as Manglik.
The six positions are conventionally fixed, but the wording matters: what makes a chart Manglik is the house Mars occupies from a given starting point, not the house number on its own. Change the reference point and the house number changes with it, which is why the same Mars can produce a dosha from one reference and not another.
| Reference point | Manglik houses | What it is read as |
|---|---|---|
| Ascendant (Lagna) | 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 12 | The primary check in most traditions |
| Moon | 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 12 | The emotional and mental dimension |
| Venus | 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 12 | Venus signifies partnership itself |
Cancellations: why a Manglik label is not final
Classical texts devote considerable space to Bhanga, or cancellation rules — conditions under which the dosha is considered nullified, reduced, or balanced by the other chart. Their existence is not a modern softening of the tradition; they are part of it, and older sources treat a Manglik placement alongside the cancelling factors as the normal way to read one.
- The cancellation rules are numerous and vary between lineages, so different astrologers may weigh the same chart differently without either being careless.
- A calculator cannot settle them from a single placement — they depend on aspects, conjunctions, the strength of Mars, and both charts in a marriage question.
- Traditional matching treats Mangal Dosha as one of several factors, not as a gate. Rashi and nakshatra matching, the Dashas and the wider charts all carry weight.
- This tool checks the implemented rule. A positive result is not a complete chart analysis and is not evidence about how any particular marriage will go.
How this calculator works
- 1Enter your birth details. Mars's position is read from your chart, so the usual date, time and place inputs apply.
- 2We locate Mars. The exact house Mars occupies is determined from each of the three reference points in turn.
- 3We check the six Manglik houses. For each reference, we test whether that house is one of 1, 2, 4, 7, 8 or 12.
- 4Read the three results. You see the house Mars occupies from each reference and whether it counts as a dosha house, so the result is transparent rather than a single word.
Calculators that pair well with this one
Marriage in a Vedic chart is read from several directions at once, and Mangal Dosha is only one of them. These four cover the neighbouring ground.
Traditional matching compares the Moon signs of both people, and its eight factors carry as much weight in most traditions as a dosha check. Love Calculator
The Chara Karakas rank Mars against the other planets, and the Darakaraka is read as the significator of the spouse — an independent view of the same question. Atmakaraka & Darakaraka Calculator
Kaal Sarp Dosh is the other widely known dosha, formed from the Rahu–Ketu axis. People often check both at once, though they are unrelated rules. Kaal Sarp Dosh Calculator
