Kaal Sarp Dosh is a yoga that forms when all seven classical planets fall within the arc between Rahu and Ketu, the two lunar nodes. With every planet on one side of the axis, the chart is said to be hemmed in by the nodes. Depending on which houses the axis occupies, the formation takes one of twelve named types, such as Anant or Kulik.
What is Kaal Sarp Dosh?
Rahu and Ketu are not physical planets but the two points where the Moon's orbit crosses the Sun's path — the lunar nodes, always exactly opposite each other. Because they sit 180° apart, they split the zodiac into two halves. Kaal Sarp Dosh is the condition where every one of the seven classical planets has gathered into a single one of those halves, leaving the other half empty.
The image behind the name is of a serpent: Rahu as the head, Ketu as the tail, with the planets caught between them. It is a striking formation, and because it requires all seven planets to cooperate it is also an uncommon one. When even a single planet falls outside the arc, the formation is broken, and a partial or broken Kaal Sarp is far more common than a complete one.
The twelve types
The named types are simply the twelve possible positions of the Rahu–Ketu axis. Each house the axis occupies produces a different name and a different traditional description.
| Type | Type | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Anant | Kulik | Vasuki |
| Shankhpal | Padma | Mahapadma |
| Takshak | Karkotak | Shankhachur |
| Ghatak | Vishdhar | Sheshnag |
It is worth saying plainly that the twelve names carry no ranking and no severity scale. They identify where the axis falls, and the traditional descriptions attached to them vary between sources. A name is a label for a geometry, not a diagnosis.
How this calculator works
- 1Enter your birth details. Rahu and Ketu are calculated points rather than visible bodies, so the full date, time and place are needed to fix them.
- 2We locate the nodal axis. The exact degrees of Rahu and Ketu are computed, giving the axis that divides the zodiac into two arcs.
- 3We test every planet. Each of the seven classical planets is checked against the arc. All seven inside means the formation is present; a single planet outside breaks it.
- 4Read the result and the type. You learn whether the full formation is present and, if it is, which of the twelve named types the axis produces.
Is Kaal Sarp Dosh harmful?
Classical opinion is genuinely divided, and this is one of the few points on which the tradition itself does not speak with one voice. Some sources describe the yoga in difficult terms; others treat it as capable of producing unusual intensity, focus or drive, and a number of respected astrologers regard a strong Kaal Sarp as neutral or even favourable depending on the chart. There is no consensus to appeal to.
- The label is weaker than the chart. The condition of the individual planets matters more than whether they happen to sit on one side of the nodes.
- A partial or broken formation is common, and many charts popularly called Kaal Sarp are not complete ones.
- Traditions differ on exceptions, and the descriptions attached to the twelve types are not consistent between sources.
- A positive result is not evidence of future misfortune, and it is not a basis for buying a remedy. AstroPath presents it as interpretive guidance only.

Mangal Dosha is the other widely known dosha, and people often check both at once even though the two rules are unrelated — one is about Mars, the other about the nodal axis. Mangal Dosha (Manglik) Calculator
