How it works

Using the Sun Sign calculator

1

Enter your date of birth

This tool uses conventional birthday ranges; exact cusp results need a timed chart.

2

We match the date

Your birthday is mapped to one of the twelve zodiac date ranges.

3

See your sign

You get your Sun sign with its element, ruling planet and traits.

Your Sun sign is the zodiac sign the Sun occupied on your date of birth, and it is what most people mean by their 'star sign'. Because the Sun spends about a month in each sign, it can be found from the date alone in almost every case. This calculator uses the Western tropical zodiac — the convention behind the familiar date ranges.

What is a Sun sign?

The Sun sign is the most widely known piece of astrology, and it is the one thing almost everyone can name about themselves. It works from a simple fact: as the Earth orbits the Sun, the Sun appears to move through the zodiac over the course of a year, spending roughly a month in each sign. The sign it was in on your birth date is your Sun sign.

That monthly rhythm is why Sun signs divide the world into just twelve groups, and why a newspaper horoscope can address millions of readers at once. It is also why astrology beyond the Sun sign exists — a label shared by a twelfth of the population can only say so much about an individual, which is where the Moon sign and the Ascendant come in.

Sun sign dates, elements and rulers

Each sign carries an element and a ruling planet, and both are used constantly in interpretation. The elements are cycled through in order, which is why every sign has a natural ally three places away.

How to find your Sun sign

For most people the date is all you need, which is what makes this the simplest calculator on the site. This tool maps a birth date to the conventional Western sign and date range, and reports the sign's element, ruling planet and traits along with it.

The one case where a date is not enough

The boundary between two signs is called the cusp, and if your birthday falls on one, the date alone may not decide your sign. The exact moment the Sun changes sign varies slightly from year to year, so a cusp birth needs the birth time and year to resolve properly.

This calculator maps dates to conventional ranges rather than computing the Sun's exact position for your birth year, so it will assign you the standard sign for that date. If you were born on a cusp and the result feels uncertain, that is a genuine limitation of a date-range method rather than a wrong answer — a chart calculation using the exact birth time is what settles it.

Sun sign, Moon sign and rising sign

These three are the pillars of a chart, and each is calculated from something different. The Sun sign comes from the date. The Moon sign comes from the Moon's position, which changes every two and a half days and needs the birth time. The rising sign comes from the horizon at the moment of birth, which changes every two hours and needs the time and place precisely.

  • Sun sign: changes monthly, findable from the date alone, and the basis of Western horoscopes.
  • Moon sign (Rashi): changes every two and a half days, and the basis of Vedic horoscopes.
  • Rising sign (Ascendant): changes every two hours, and the anchor of the houses in a full chart.
  • In Vedic astrology the Moon sign is given more weight than the Sun; in Western astrology the Sun is. Both are conventions, and it is worth knowing which one a reading was built on.

One thing worth being clear about: a Sun sign is a description of a placement, not a prediction about a person. Sun-sign readings are best treated as a shared cultural shorthand and a starting point for reflection rather than as a statement of character. The traits listed here are the conventional associations of the sign, not claims about you.

The Sun sign is one of three anchors, and the other two need a little more than a date. These four tools continue from here.

The Moon sign is the Vedic counterpart and the one Vedic horoscopes are read from. It needs your birth time, since the Moon changes sign every two and a half days. Rashi (Moon Sign) Calculator

The Ascendant is the third anchor, and the one that sets the houses in a full chart. It needs your exact birth time and place, since it changes every two hours. Rising Sign (Ascendant) Calculator

The lunar phase on your birth date is a popular companion question to the Sun sign, and it needs only the date as well. Moon Phase Calculator

Still have a question?

A Sun sign is the zodiac sign assigned to the Sun’s position at birth. Tropical zodiac signs are twelve equal sectors, not the same as astronomical constellations. This date-range tool provides the conventional Western Sun-sign label.
