Moon Phase Calculator

The Moon phase on a given date tells you how much of the Moon was lit and where it was in its cycle — from new moon to full moon and back. Great for birthdays and any date.

How it works

Using the Moon Phase calculator

1

Pick a date

Choose any date — your birthday, today, or any day you like.

2

We compute the phase

A mean lunar-cycle approximation estimates the phase and illumination.

3

See the result

You get the phase name, illumination percentage and Moon age in days.

The Moon phase on a date describes how much of the Moon's face is lit from Earth, which depends on the angle between the Sun, the Earth and the Moon. The cycle runs from new moon through first quarter to full moon and back over about 29.5 days, and this calculator reports the phase, the illumination percentage and the Moon's age in days.

What a Moon phase actually is

The Moon does not make its own light, and it does not change shape. Half of it is always lit by the Sun. What changes is how much of that lit half we can see from Earth, and that depends entirely on where the Moon is in its orbit relative to the Sun. When it sits between the Earth and the Sun, the lit side faces away from us and we see a new moon. Half an orbit later, the lit side faces us squarely and we see a full moon.

So a phase is a viewing angle, not a physical change. The eight familiar names mark the notable points of that cycle, and the illuminated percentage moves smoothly between them rather than jumping from one to the next.

Why the cycle is 29.5 days and not 27

The Moon takes about 27.3 days to complete one orbit and return to the same position against the stars. But the Earth is moving around the Sun at the same time, so by the time the Moon returns to that spot, the Sun has shifted too — and the Moon needs roughly two more days to catch up to the same Sun–Earth alignment, which is what a phase actually measures. That is why the phase cycle is about 29.5 days while the orbital period is about 27.3.

How to use it

  1. 1Pick a date. Any date works — today, a birthday, a wedding date or a date in the future.
  2. 2We compute the phase. The Moon's age within the cycle is estimated from the mean lunar month, and the phase name and illumination follow from it.
  3. 3Read the result. You get the phase name, the illuminated percentage and the Moon's age in days, which together place the date precisely within the cycle.

No birth details are needed, and none are used. A Moon phase is the same for everyone on Earth at a given moment — it is a shared astronomical fact rather than a personal calculation, so location and time of birth play no part.

The birthday Moon phase

The most popular use of this tool is finding the Moon phase on the day you were born. It is an appealing detail, and unlike Sun signs and Moon signs it is the same for every person born on that date, whatever their time and place.

It is worth keeping in proportion, though. A birth-date Moon phase is a real astronomical fact about the sky that day, but it is not a natal Moon placement. Your actual natal Moon — the one astrology uses, and the one that gives you your Rashi — depends on your birth time and place, and it is a separate calculation. The birthday phase is a nice thing to know, not an astrological placement.

The lunar cycle has also organised human calendars, festivals and planting seasons for millennia, and several major festivals are still timed to the phases. Knowing the phase on a given date connects that date to that older rhythm — which is a satisfying thing in itself, with no claim about what it means for your life.

The Moon phase is a date-only calculation, and the calculators it pairs with split into the ones that also need nothing more and the ones that take you further into the Moon.

The Sun sign needs only your birth date too, which makes it the natural companion — the two together describe the sky on that day. Sun Sign (Zodiac) Calculator
