Transit Chart Calculator (Gochar)

A transit chart (Gochar) shows where the planets are in the sky right now. Comparing today's transits to your birth chart is how Vedic astrology reads current influences.

Reading the current sky…

How it works

Using the Transit Chart calculator

1

Open the tool

Transits are computed for the current moment, no birth details needed.

2

We read the live sky

Each planet's present sidereal sign and degree is calculated.

See today's positions

You get a clean table of where every planet is transiting now.

A transit chart — called Gochar in Vedic astrology — shows where the planets are in the sky right now, rather than where they were at your birth. It needs no birth details, because the current sky is the same for everyone. A transit becomes personally meaningful only when the moving planets are compared against a natal chart.

What is a transit chart?

If a birth chart is a photograph, a transit chart is a live view. Both record planetary positions; one is frozen at your birth and never changes, the other updates continuously. This is the cleanest way to keep the two apart, and it resolves most of the confusion people have about why their chart and their horoscope seem to disagree.

Because the transit sky is shared, this calculator asks for no birth details at all. That is not a shortcut — it is the nature of the calculation. At any given moment there is one set of planetary positions, and everyone on Earth is looking at it. What differs is what those positions mean for a particular chart, and that comparison is a separate step.

How fast the planets move

Transits are read differently depending on speed, and the reason is simple: a slow planet stays in one place long enough to define a chapter, while a fast one passes through in days.

BodyTime in one signRead as
MoonAbout 2.5 daysDay-to-day mood and short-term colour
SunAbout 1 monthMonthly themes
Mercury, VenusWeeks to a few monthsShort-term detail (both can retrograde)
MarsAbout 6 weeksEnergy, drive, friction
JupiterAbout 1 yearGrowth, opportunity, expansion
SaturnAbout 2.5 yearsStructure, discipline, long chapters
Rahu and KetuAbout 18 monthsSlow karmic emphasis

Two caveats on those figures. A planet moving retrograde can cross a boundary three times over several months, so a sign change is not always a clean single event. And the Moon's two and a half days is an average — its speed varies through its orbit, so the actual transit can be noticeably shorter or longer.

Gochar, Sade Sati and the best-known transits

The best-known transit in Vedic astrology is Sade Sati, the roughly seven-and-a-half-year passage of Saturn across the three signs centred on your natal Moon. It is a transit calculation through and through — nothing in your own chart changes, only Saturn's position — which is exactly why it affects everyone with the same Moon sign at the same time. It also demonstrates the general rule: a transit becomes personal through the comparison, and in that case the comparison is against the Moon.

  • Slow transits define chapters. Saturn's roughly two-and-a-half-year stay in a sign is why it is read as a structural period rather than a passing mood.
  • Fast transits add texture. The Moon changes sign every two and a half days, which is why daily horoscopes move so quickly.
  • Retrograde motion complicates the dates. Slow planets station and reverse near boundaries, so a transit can repeat.
  • Transit interpretations are a tradition, not a forecast. AstroPath presents them as interpretive guidance, never as guaranteed predictions.

A transit chart answers half the question; the other half is the chart it is compared against. These four cover the neighbouring calculations.

Transits are only personal against your own chart, so this is the natural companion — every planet, house and the Ascendant they hang from. Birth Chart Calculator

Sade Sati is the best-known transit of all, calculated from Saturn's current position against your natal Moon. It is the clearest worked example of a transit read personally. Shani Sade Sati Calculator

The Dasha system is the other half of Vedic timing — where transits are the moving sky, the Dasha is your personal period timeline. Reading both together is standard. Dasha Calculator

The Moon sign is what daily transits are conventionally read against, which is why Vedic horoscopes are indexed by Rashi rather than by Sun sign. Rashi (Moon Sign) Calculator
